A Plus Roofing specializes in a variety of roofing systems including EPDM roofing systems.
What is EPDM?
EPDM stand for ethylene propylene diene monomer, which in English simply means a synthetic rubber compound that is used as a roofing membrane because of its outstanding environmental benefits such as:
- Superior heat resistance
- Superior cold resistance
- Superior ozone resistance
- Superior weather resistance
- Excellent resistance to acidic and alkaline substances including ketones.
EPDM works well as a barrier from the elements and as a roofing material helps to keep bad weather out all year and the warm air inside during the winter. This means that EPDM helps to drive down the cost of heating and keeps the rain from leaking into your space in the summer. Additionally, EPDM has a long life span because it is resistant to acids and alkaline substances. Weather resistance means that it works in all kinds of weather without degrading. EPDM roofing membranes are even effective in extreme weather with a heat range of as much as 150 degrees Fahrenheit and as cold as -50 degrees Fahrenheit. That range is perfect for the Minneapolis, Minnesota area.
How is EPDM Installed?
EPDM roofing membranes come in rolls up to 80 mil in thickness. The width of EPDM roofing membranes varies a lot. Rolls have a minimum width of 7.5 feet and a maximum width of 50 feet. The varying widths allow for accurate installation of EPDM roofing membranes on all sizes of roofing surfaces. The benefit is that very little alteration needs to occur. EPDM rubber membranes can be fully adhered to the roofing insulation, mechanically fastened or ballasted with smooth river rock. EPDM seams, those between rolls of membrane material, are sealed using special liquid adhesives that are long lasting, but do not damage the membrane. Some applications use tape that is specially designed to work with EPDM membrane material. Both methods work efficiently under all kinds of weather and are equally resistant to chemical and physical weathering. The installation process is fairly straight forward and usually much faster than it takes to lay down traditional tar and gravel roofing materials. The major benefits include annual reduction in heating and air conditioning costs, compliance to fire regulations, and the extreme resistance to chemical and physical weathering.
